turning the tables

My first Oregon wedding that I wasn't paid to shoot...and it was a rollicking good time, to put it mildly!

This is my friend Ara. As I said in my toast at her reception, she was the first person in Oregon I was introduced to, and she hugged me and welcomed me into her home and was determined to be my friend. I was determined to hate her, as I suspected she was trying to seduce my boyfriend by laying suggestively on logs at secluded waterfalls at undisclosed locations around the PNW. (You may all laugh now at that entire commentary.) Instead, a surprisingly unlikely friendship grew. I'm still not entirely sure what we have in common, outside of photography, an ever-increasing number of matching clothing items, and a need to shimmy once in a while, but I suppose one needn't dissect a friendship for it to be legitimate. People who know Ara and people who know ME are probably still scratching their heads as to how we hit it off. I say it's a testament to her ability to disarm anyone, greet the world with enthusiasm, and when I got here, I needed friends, and Ara signed up - and now can't get rid of me.

In fact, not only can she not get rid of me, we're officially vacation buddies, traveling around the west coast and Southwest together, and I work for Ara as a wedding photographer. Usually on a Saturday afternoon she and I would be working our asses off, running around with our gear. Instead, this past Saturday, Ara found herself glued to a chair getting her hair done, I was cooking for the reception, and only took about 20 photos before the professional photographer showed up. My deal with myself was that there was going to be a famous photographer there working, and that I was going to observe as much as possible and stay the hell out of the way. I also figured the sheer number of cameras at the event was going to be borderline absurd. After the paid professional showed up, I put my camera down on the mantle in Ara's room, and didn't pick it up until I packed up to leave late on Sunday. I am a little heartbroken for myself that I didn't really shoot Ara, every time I see a photo pop up on facebook I am insanely jealous, but in reality I chipped in plenty, by feeding a herd of people, drunk-wrangling, and turning into a wedding coordinator. :)

While I worked hard this weekend ensuring that the wedding went off without a hitch and that everyone was fed and happy, I also managed to have some amazing fun that will stay with me the rest of my life. Friday night I was in a hot tub in Yachats, OR with a great group of friends and a round or two of drinks, watching falling stars and appreciating the Milky Way. By about 1:30 in the morning, a group of us ran from the tub to the ocean and jumped in, drinks in hand, yelling "SPRING BREAK YACHATS!!! WOOOOO!!!!" and then raced back to the tub to warm up again. Saturday morning, while cooking breakfast for the crew, we danced to nuwave and laughed ourselves silly.

Saturday evening I watched as our friend Ben officiated the darling little service on the rocky beach, and then cried during the toasts, cheered with great enthusiasm not just the professional fire dancers, but our friend who revealed right there on the lawn that he, too, could fire dance, we hooted and screamed for the belly dancer - I mean - what other wedding have YOU been to with professional fire dancers and belly dancers?! Thought so. By 3:30 in the morning, the house was mostly clean, the last of the drinks were put away or taken away, and I fell into bed for a few hours of sleep before making breakfast for the brunch, taking a long walk on the beach with my friend Emily, and enjoying the hell out of the giant bathtub I had in my bathroom.

Sunday night, before leaving the house to the newlyweds, a few of us dunked back in the hot tub, before racing into the giant shower with dual shower heads in my room - I had been dying to get a group in there to play tag all weekend - and finally three of us were in there, and once again yelled to the amusement of those in the living room, "SPRING BREAK YACHATS!!! WOOOOO!!!!"

I then sat on a rocky jetty, watching the sun sink, thinking about the world, seeing seals playing in the waves, and knowing that it was a weekend I'd never, ever forget.

I cannot thank Ara and Nathan enough for including me in the weekend. I am looking forward to our return to Yachats next summer for the anniversary - and I cannot wait to see more photos from the big day. It felt very strange indeed to be a participant, not an employee, at a wedding.

Secret Number 24: I love being skinny, is that a crime?

I can't even mention how I like being thin because everyone instanly jumps over me. I'm not anorexic, I do think I've gained a lot of weight during the summer vacations and I'm willing to do a healthy diet and excercise to be as skinny as I was before.

----
Another tub shot, yeah.
I edited this with Microsoft Picture Manager so you have to give me some credit, haha.
Yesterday was my sister's party! So much fun, I stayed up stairs at the beggining of the night but then I went down and chatted with some of my sister's friends.

Two guys stayed in my bathroom until 7 am. They were boyfriends and it was really cute because she was quite well but he was totally hammered. He pucked all night, he was half asleep with his head in the wc and she stayed next to him caressing his hair...
It's the least romantic situation I know, but how he looked at him was beautiful. Anyways, she helped us clean and was really nice so everything turned out pretty cool.

I love parties :D
